What’s in your water?
Total trihalomethanes (TTHMs)
Liver, kidney or central nervous system problems; increased risk of cancer
EWG guideline0.15 ppb
Legal limit80 ppb
ppb = Parts per billion
Trihalomethanes are cancer-causing contaminants that form during water treatment with chlorine and other disinfectants. The total trihalomethanes group includes four chemicals: chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane and bromoform.

You should know
Total trihalomethanes (TTHMS) can form when chlorine used to disinfect water reacts with organic matter already present in the water, such as leaves or plants. Alternative disinfectants, removing organic pre-water treatment, monitoring, and filtration are all ways to reduce TTHMs in your drinking water.

Studies have shown that long-term exposure to TTHMs put people at risk of cancer, reproductive issues, and even liver, kidney, and nervous system damage. (Another reason to never drink water from the pool!)

Health guidelines

EWG guideline0.15 ppb
The health guideline of 0.15 ppb for trihalomethanes was defined by in a peer-reviewed scientific study by EWG and represents a one-in-one-million lifetime cancer risk level. as a draft public health goal, the level of drinking water contaminant that does not pose a significant health risk. This health guideline protects against cancer.

EPA Maxiumum Contaminant Level (MCL)

The legal limit for the group of four trihalomethanes, established in 1998, was based on the need for residual disinfectant levels in water served to customers and the cost of treatment. This limit does not fully protect against the risk of cancer due to exposure to trihalomethanes.
