What’s in your water?
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
Skin changes; thymus gland problems; immune deficiencies; reproductive or nervous system difficulties; increased risk of cancer
EWG guideline0.09 ppb
Legal limit0.5 ppb
ppb = Parts per billion
PCBs are synthetic chemicals banned in the U.S. since the 1970s because of their toxicity. PCBs contaminate water by leaching from landfills and hazardous waste clean-up sites. PCBs increase the risk of cancer.

You should know
VOCs, also known as Volatile Organic Compounds, are gases emitted into the air from products or processes. They are widely used in various industries and products like paints, varnishes, wax, disinfection and even cosmetic products. Since there is such a wide variety of pollutants, health risks also vary greatly depending on levels of exposure and length of time exposed. Some effects include eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, loss of coordination, nausea, liver, and kidney damage.
Health concerns

Health guidelines

EWG guideline0.09 ppb
The health guideline of 0.09 ppb for PCBs was defined by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment as a public health goal, the level of a drinking water contaminant that does not pose a significant health risk. This health guideline protects against cancer.

EPA Maxiumum Contaminant Level (MCL)

The legal limit for PCBs, established in 1991, was based on analytical detection limits at the time that the standard was set. This limit may not fully protect against the risk of cancer due to PCB exposure.
